Use this fast and easy email testing tool to determine whether various aspects of your email server are working. Whether you want to test Exchange connectivity or any other type of email server, this email testing tool will perform a connectivity check using the email protocol you specify.
The Dotcom-Monitor email tester simply requires the email server address, a valid username, and password. You also need to specify which protocol you are trying to test: POP, IMAP or SMTP.
POP3 - Post Office Protocol, sometimes referred to simply as POP, is a simple protocol used to retrieve messages from an email server.
IMAP - Internet Message Access Protocol, takes email protocols a step further by implementing a way to manage a mailbox from multiple devices, thus leaving the messages on the server to be retrieved later from another client.
Our free tool is a simple and easy to use SMTP tester-choose this option to perform an SMTP check.
SMTP - Simple Mail Transport Protocol, is the industry standard for sending email to remote systems. While it is true that SMTP is the common protocol to send mail that does not mean it is an exclusive protocol. For example, Microsoft Exchange connectivity within Microsoft systems has an additional protocol called MAPI as well as a separate application to perform mobile data synchronization called ActiveSync.
The ability to use encryption must also be specified in order to properly connect to an email server. If enabled, the tool will negotiate with your server to determine whether SSL or TLS will be used to establish connectivity to the email account. If you are unsure whether your server requires SSL or TLS encryption, you can try running this test with encryption turned on as well as off to determine the appropriate settings.
Microsoft Exchange Server is a robust email server widely used by both small business as well as large corporations. An Exchange test can be performed using several different methods. With our simple Exchange test tool you can quickly check Exchange mailbox connectivity via SMTP, POP, IMAP or ActiveSync.
Test results include various measurements such as duration to connection and success or failure status. If there is a failure, the error codes and error descriptions are displayed in the test output.
The email server test results are displayed from over 20 different locations around the world. This global network provides insight into specific email servers that may have connectivity issues.
Is this test secure? While we do not store your personal information on our servers, we recommend a best practice of setting up a dedicated account on your email server for uptime and availability monitoring. This way you do not have to worry about personal information being compromised when you are performing a test.
Do you view the content of emails on the server being tested? These particular tests do not download any email from your mail server. If you are looking for more advanced testing that allows you to both send email and retrieve email from your server, simulating a real user in the system, then you should try our round trip monitoring. If you have a Microsoft Exchange email server then you should sign up for a free trial of our ActiveSync monitoring.
How do I test an Exchange Server? Exchange supports all three protocols, POP3, IMAP and SMTP. If your Exchange administrator has enabled POP or IMAP, you should be able to test them. SMTP is the standard for domain to domain communication. If you know that your organization uses ActiveSync, then you may benefit from a free 30 trial of Exchange ActiveSync monitoring.
If you are interested in receiving more detailed results, trending reports and ongoing monitoring of your email servers, then you might be interested in trying a free 30 day trial of the Dotcom-Monitor email server monitoring platform. The monitoring platform allows you to setup periodic monitoring from as little as once every 3 hours to a frequent as once a minute. You can set up daily and weekly reports that summarize the performance of your server over time as well as see trends using the advanced charts and graphs. You can even setup timeout thresholds so that you receive alerts if a monitor ever takes to long to complete or if an error is detected from one of over 20 locations around the world.
We also have the ability to both send an email and check to pull the email off your server in one test using either Microsoft ActiveSync or round trip SNMP to POP or IMAP.
Round trip email monitoring provides the additional value of knowing that users around the world can not only successfully connect to your server but they can both send emails and retrieve email from their inbox. The process also automatically deletes emails sent in this manner so that your inbox does not become cluttered with messages.
ActiveSync is a unique data synchronization tool for Microsoft Exchange connectivity that allows you to sync email, contacts and calendars. Using Dotcom-Monitor Exchange ActiveSync monitoring you can connect to an Exchange server using ActiveSync remotely to make sure users around the world are able to both sync, send and receive emails using the ActiveSync protocol.
